WHEREAS, in 1908, an act to incorporate the City of Kingsland, in the county of Camden, State of Georgia, was introduced to define its limits, it municipal powers and privileges, and for other purposes; and
WHEREAS, the General Assemble of Georgia did enact, that the City of Kingsland, in the county of Camden, be and the same was incorporated, as well as established the corporate limits as one-half mile in all directions from the Seaboard Air Line depot, and;
WHEREAS, the government of said city was vested in a mayor and four council members and that W. H. King was appointed as the first mayor of said city, along with John W. Sheffield, C. Swanson, C.T. Proctor, and W. G. Patterson were appointed as the first council for said city, and established terms for said council, as well as determined the first election to be held in January 1909, and established all other regulations regarding future elections, terms and qualifications for elected officials, and
WHEREAS, the said corporation would have a common seal, shall be capable of taking, purchasing, holding, and selling property, real or personal, for any municipal purposes, to provide for the funding of a marshal and such other police as needed, and to establish a street tax of $3 for each male age 16 thru 50 years of age, and that said males of the town may be allowed to work off their street tax at $.50 per day, and
WHEREAS, the mayor and council shall establish a mayor’s court for the trial and punishment of offenders against the ordinances of the city, the punishment being limited to a fine not to exceed $50 dollars, or imprisonment not exceeding thirty days, and the mayor shall have the power to issue warrants for any offense against the laws of said state committed, within the limits of said city, and
WHEREAS, the mayor and council shall have the right to tax all shows, auctioneers, and sleight-of-hand performers and gift enterprises, that the mayor and council have the power to tax all property, that the mayor and council have the right to prescribe fire limits and the plan and materials of buildings built within the fire limits, and
WHEREAS, the above original incorporation of the City of Kingsland was approved on August 6, 1908 by the General Assembly of the State of Georgia, and
WHEREAS, the city of Kingsland is celebrating its centennial during the year 2008 and the re-reading of this original incorporation charter
is a part of that celebration.
